In London we are constantly surrounded by a beautiful melting pot of cultures, races and religions. Throughout history, many different people have found themselves settling in our capital city. However, wrapped up in our own little bubbles, we rarely delve into their lives or try to understand the traditions behind these communities. We simply view them from afar.
Only 1.5% of Londoners are Sikhs & Sikhism is not a religion many people know a lot about. Jaswant, a Londoner and a committed Sikh, aims to change this and to share his fascinating culture and traditions with other Londoners.
The tour will commence with a visit to Karamsar Sikh Temple, in East London at 5.30 pm, where Jaswant will take you on a tour of the Temple and provide an introduction to Sikhism, its values, traditions and beliefs. There will be plenty of opportunity at this point to ask questions about the Sikh faith.
You'll then experience the amazing beauty and tranquility of the special Prayer of Reharas Sahib and Singing of Hymns (Kirtan Shabad), the evening prayers for Sikhs. There is no obligation to stay for the entire service, just as long as you'd like.
Following prayers, you will experience the generosity of the Sikh community at a Langar, a delicious vegetarian meal, prepared and served by the Temple for free to anyone who is hungry.
The Sikh Gurdwara (temple) itself gracefully combines traditional Indian and Punjabi designs with modern western architecture. Its distinctive domes are perhaps its most striking features. Carved entirely from pink sandstone in Rajasthan-India, it was shipped to the UK and reassembled.
A special, unique insight into a colourful community and culture. For something educational, social and inspiring, this is one not to be missed!Read Less
