This Funzing Experience:

How common are cults in the UK? In this fascinating talk, Jennifer will cite statistics to show the problem is more common than you may think, as well as exploring recent cases in the news - the Bikram yoga scandal and Southwark’s case of the Maoist cult leader who kept his daughter as a slave.

You will also learn what kind of person gets recruited to cults, as well as why they do.

Jennifer will relay astonishing psychological research which provides insights into conformity and obedience – how many of us are really susceptible to external manipulation?

How do you recruit someone? Jennifer will explore the process of ‘Brainwashing’, including the process of ‘Lovebombing’; discussing approaches such as ‘Flirty Fishing’; picking up people in bars, taking them back to the compound for sex, in order to recruit them the following morning.

Cults and sex: from celibacy to free love, Jennifer will discuss case studies including Heaven’s Gate The Moonies and The Children of God.

‘The Cause’: from enlightenment to UFOs, Jennifer will explore some of the ‘missions’ cults cite themselves as having, as well as looking at the research into Conspiracy Theories and the psychological lure of ‘knowing’ a 'truth'.

Cults and Violence: Charles Manson & the Manson Family horrific murders, Waco Seige, Jonestown Massacre – a case of mass suicide, or murder? You decide. Jennifer will also discuss the current case of a torture cult in India which left 20 dead.

The ‘Them vs Us’ Mentality and its dangers: Jennifer will explore the issues of prejudice and discrimination, and how potent this mind-set can be.

Cult Psychology and Terrorism: how similar is the process of recruitment to radicalisation – is it correct to use the term ‘brainwashing’ for both? Jennifer will explain the current research into terrorists; what kind of person becomes a terrorist? And what is the process?
