This Funzing Experience:
Why do people become radicalised enough to wish to kill and die for a holy cause? What is behind the radical mind?

Based on his own experience with Islamist and jihadist networks in the UK and abroad, Usama will argue the complex mix of radicalisation. Being a product of both ideology and personal and political vulnerabilities and grievances including otherisation, xenophobia, racism and international politics.

Violent extremism exists in many religions and political ideologies. What lessons can we learn from the UK's experience of radicalisation, and how can we help build more cohesive communities?

Imam Dr Usama Hasan is a London-based scientist (physics, astronomy & artificial intelligence), theologian and traditionally-trained imam with permission to teach the Islamic scriptures (Qur'an and Hadith). He is currently Head of Islamic Studies at Quilliam International, a counter-extremism and pro-democracy organisation. He has served as a London-based imam for over 30 years, and was a leader of UK salafi islamism for 20 years from his teens, and fought jihad against communist forces in Afghanistan, 1990-1. After 9/11, Usama engaged in much soul-searching and began to promote inclusivist and pluralist interpretations of Islam and the Qur'an.

Usama has a PhD, MA and MSc from the Universities of Cambridge and London in Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. He works on religion and science, interfaith harmony, and countering extremism. Usama has authored a number of papers and articles on both science and religion, and translated several classical Islamic texts into English. In 2016, he was physically attacked by the man who went on to ringlead the London Bridge terrorist attack of 2017.
