This Funzing Experience:

Despite our scientific age, the allure of divination still exists in the modern world. Our largely secular and rational society has still not completely divorced the modern mind from the mystical promise held by psychics, palmists or tarot card readers. For some of us, these experiences still hold true, and their revelations still remain relevant. So the question still persists after hundreds of years of rational scientific enquiry - Why do we still seek these experiences? What does the divinatory experience offer the modern mind? And, of course, what the hell is going on?

Parapsychologist Dr David Luke and tarot scholar Adam Malone will explore these questions drawing on theories from thinkers such as Carl Jung and Iain McGilchrist and some of the weird and wonderful out-there scientific experiments that allow us to begin to place the divinatory pursuit within a more rational understanding.

Dr David Luke is Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Greenwich where he teaches an undergraduate course on the Psychology of Exceptional Human Experience. His research focuses on trans-personal experiences, anomalous phenomena and altered states of consciousness, especially via psychedelics, having published more than 100 academic papers in this area, including five books, most recently Neurotransmissions: Essays on Psychedelics (2015) and Talking with the Spirits: Ethnographies from Between the Worlds (2014). He has studied techniques of consciousness alteration from South America to India, from the perspective of scientists, shamans and Shivaites, but increasingly has more questions than answers.

Adam is currently completing an MA in Myth, Cosmology and The Sacred at Canterbury Christchurch University where he has written on tarot divination as well as the meta-myth of David Icke. He has worked in both London and Brighton as a professional tarot card reader for nearly a decade as well as producing film projects on the indigenous shamanic practices of Mexico. He currently runs Club Imaginal in Brighton, and is on the board for Breaking Convention, Europe’s leading psychedelic research conference.
