This Funzing Experience:
Hallucinogenic drugs in a hospital clinic? Tripping as treatment?

Scientists at some of the world's most prestigious universities are studying single psychedelic therapy sessions to treat severe mental health conditions. Initial results suggesting mushrooms can bring immediate and long-lasting relief have captured headlines worldwide. But what do these mushroom sessions consist of and how do they work? A psychologist and participant from the ‘Psilocybin for depression study’ at Imperial College take you step by step through the psychedelic treatment journey. You will learn about the history of psychedelics as treatments for mental distress, the current research studies, the content of sessions, and what participants say about how this unique intervention changed their lives.

Dr Rosalind Watts is a clinical psychologist in the Psychedelic Research Group at Imperial College (led by Robin Carhart-Harris), where the first modern study looking at psilocybin as a treatment for depression took place.
Rosalind was a "trip-sitter" for participants in this study, and has published research exploring participant accounts of the impact of psilocybin, focusing on the theme of 'increased connection to self, others, and the world'. She is now developing training for therapists in the upcoming psilocybin study at Imperial, and pondering on the potential of psychedelics to help heal a disconnected world.

Ian Roullie was one of the 20 participants in David Nutt and Robin Carhart-Harris’ clinical study on using psilocybin to treat treatment-resistant depression at Imperial College in Summer 2015. Having suffered from depression and anxiety for much of his adult life, psilocybin has been the most effective and long-lasting treatment he has undergone. While Ian is now back on conventional medication, he is determined to see this potentially vital treatment become a mainstream option on the NHS. He hopes that by speaking about psilocybin treatment openly this will help create a greater level of public understanding and help to normalise this treatment and its potential benefits.
