This Funzing Experience:

New Guinea, is the World’s second largest island. Its rainforests are amongst the wildest and most impenetrable in the World.
High in the rugged highlands live an elusive tribe called the Mek people.

Their villages cling to mountain peaks which soar to a staggering fifteen thousand feet. The Mek’s recent history is one of cannibalism and tribal warfare.

They still maintain their ancestral customs, virtually untouched by the outside world. This is the story of the coming of age of two young Mek boys, Maabet and Dimius.

Cannibalism was also endemic in the highlands. As recently as 1982, a neighbouring clan killed a missionary and ate him and his twelve assistants.

The film follows the patriarch of the group and his special relationship with the children to be initiated. A boy may be initiated as young as 8 years old through the rites of passage ceremony into manhood known as a “wetme’”. There is an obligation to sacrifice a large highly prized pig for the ceremony to take place...

John was the director and cameraman of a self-sufficient film crew accompanied by an anthropologist on a journey of several weeks to film the Mek people deep in West Papua’s highlands for Discovery Channel. The Mek village is up a steep gorge, outsiders have never before visited the tribe, and their unique language has never been translated..
