This Funzing Experience:
In 1938, Hitler met Neville Chamberlain, who came away believing that “here was a man who could be relied upon when he had given his word”. This was a failure to recognise deception that had dire consequences for the world. Could we do better today?

Modern research into body language, physiological responses and speech pattern analysis makes us better placed to detect deception. At the same time, it could equip us to deceive others, should that be our interest.

Both art and science are involved in reading the cues or “tells” of lying and myths abound as to what we should look for. Proficiency is important in many contexts, such as courting, job interviews, political judgements, boardroom negotiations, police interrogation of suspects, jury decisions, as well as our everyday dealings with other people.

Some personality types lie more successfully than others but deception is a skill that to some extent can be learned. It has much in common with acting. This illustrated lecture will contribute to the effective reading of people's emotions and intentions as well giving guidance in how to send the right signals to others.

Dr Glenn Wilson is one of Britain's best-known psychologists, specialising in personality, criminal psychology and sexual behaviour. He has been Visiting Professor at Gresham College, London, as well as several American institutions, including Stanford University, University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Nevada. He appears regularly on TV especially in news and documentary programmes. One of his specialities is teaching psychology to performing artists in order to enhance their presentation. His book "Psychology for Performing Artists" in now in its 2nd Edition, while "Body Language: A Practical Guide" is now in its 3rd (2018).
