This Funzing Experience:
The discovery of over 30 bodies in Moscow between 1921-23 led to widespread gossip throughout the city.
As it became apparent that all of the victims were male and had been killed with the same modus operandi, police were able to narrow down their search to one particular individual.

The subsequent court case of the main suspect and his wife, who was arrested as an accomplice, would not only attract the fascination of the huge crowds who gathered each day, but also two prominent writers whose careers later followed very different paths.

Walter Duranty was a controversial playboy who was heavily criticised in his role as Moscow correspondent for The New York Times. The other was future literary icon Mikhail Bulgakov who had just arrived in Moscow from his role as a doctor during the Russian Civil War.

While the writings of Duranty and Bulgakov provide fascinating insights of their own, the case would receive an even more interesting post-mortem a couple of years later by a group of criminologists who looked to fit the background of the killer into new Communist ideas about crime.

In this talk, Dr Mark Vincent will not only reconstruct the serial killer case in forensic detail also looking at how it was reported in different ways.
Finally, he will demonstrate how criminologists attempted to 'make' the murderer fit into their pre-conceived notions about what an archetypal Soviet killer should look like.
