Manipulation: Why Do We Allow It?

In this world populated with divisive politicians, translucent internet trolls, and corporation manipulation it's hard to crowbar the facts from fiction—after all is a horse a horse or just a hornless unicorn? And, it's even harder to understand why we allow ourselves to be manipulated.

Come meet Scott McArthur who will bring the facts to a talk that will discuss why facts don't actually tell the whole story.

Changing minds, including our own, can be a very tricky business. Simple logic suggests that giving people the facts will move them to change their minds but this doesn’t work.

Discover the limitations of fact-based personal and organisational transformation, how your brain uses availability heuristics (a mental rule of thumb) to help you make fast, but sometimes incorrect, decisions, and how we tend to undervalue evidence that contradicts our beliefs and overvalue evidence that confirms them (even alt. facts)– a phenomenon known as confirmation bias.

Scott will give tips and tricks to help you develop critical thinking, of course what you do with this knowledge is up to you...
