Online Talk: Lovesickness and Obsessions
- Exact online details will be provided after booking
**Valentine's Day Special**
The course of true love seldom runs smoothly and the agony associated with falling in love is often equal to the ecstasy. Lovesickness was recognised by ancient physicians as a distressing condition and one of the earliest examples of a psychosomatic illness.
Being in love has much in common with mental illness, especially mania and obsessional-compulsive disorder, both with respect to experience and brain chemistry. When it is unreciprocated, or the relationship suddenly breaks up, the hurt is even greater. It is indeed possible to die of a broken heart.
Dr Wilson reviews scientific evidence concerning the distress caused by unrequited love and how the pain of a relationship breakup can be managed. He also examines some of the pathological and dangerous manifestations of love, such as erotomania, extreme jealousy, stalking and murderous violence toward a partner.
Dr Glenn Wilson, previously of Gresham College and the Institute of Psychiatry, London, and the University of Nevada, Reno, is author of Love’s Mysteries (with David Nias) and The Science of Love (with Chris McLaughlin). He has been researching the topic of love, in both its positive and destructive forms, for many decades.
