Meet Usama Hasan :
Imam Dr Usama Hasan is a London-based scientist (physics, astronomy & artificial intelligence), theologian and traditionally-trained imam with permission to teach the Islamic scriptures (Qur'an and Hadith). He is currently Head of Islamic Studies at Quilliam International, a counter-extremism and pro-democracy organisation. He has served as a London-based imam for over 30 years, and was a leader of UK salafi islamism for 20 years from his teens, and fought jihad against communist forces in Afghanistan, 1990-1. After 9/11, Usama engaged in much soul-searching and began to promote inclusivist and pluralist interpretations of Islam and the Qur'an.
Usama has a PhD, MA and MSc from the Universities of Cambridge and London in Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. He works on religion and science, interfaith harmony, and countering extremism. Usama has authored a number of papers and articles on both science and religion, and translated several classical Islamic texts into English. In 2016, he was physically attacked by the man who went on to ringlead the London Bridge terrorist attack of 2017.
