Meet Alicia Ma:
My story is a long and winding journey via St Martin's School of Art, through design, journalism and copywriting, followed by 30 inspiring years enmeshed in the joy and passion of West African music - both as an avid listener, and as a performer with some great names from that continent. All of the elements of my story finally coalesced into an exploration of the transformational power of sound using gongs and other healing instruments.
I delivered my first gong bath and guided meditation at Zen Yoga in Camberwell, London in early 2013. My meditations - using creative imagery and positive suggestions - are unique to me and often channelled in the moment. They have become a vitally important part of my sessions, because the subconscious mind is unable to distinguish between imagination and reality, making visualisation a potent tool for self-change.
I have always felt that therapeutic sound was shamanic in nature, and this year, I decided to put my theory to the test by embarking on foundational training with Maori and Inca shamans, from where my Huna name, Ma Ri Atu Ma comes. I look forward to incorporating what I have learned into my practice.
