This Funzing Experience:
Hollywood has shown it a zillion times: From Jonny Five to Ex Machina’s Artificial Intelligence AVA to WALL-E and EVE – future AI will be emotionally intelligent and can indeed be quite emotional. But where are we on that, and will it ever become a reality?

Björn Schuller’s ‘Can A.I. have Emotions?’ talk will share with you latest insights into the state of “Affective Computing” – the science behind computers and emotions. Largely unnoticed by the public, machines have indeed started to do their homework on emotions, recently creating a quite vibrant start-up scene around the topic. Based on latest competitions in this exciting field, you will be surprised to learn what machines can already sense from your voice, face, and physiology about your affective state. You’ll also see how machines can these days react to emotions, and even hear real-life moving stories about computers and robots successfully teaching autistic children about emotions and many other applications slowly becoming a reality. But can machines actually have emotions? Facts will be first, but prepare also to get absorbed into a science-driven discussion on what Artificial Emotional Intelligence ultimately might evolve into, and whether we need to be afraid or euphoric about it.

Björn gained his doctorate and state doctorate in electrical engineering and information technology from the Technical University of Munich on topics mainly around computers and emotion recognition before joining Imperial College London, where he currently is a Reader in Machine Learning. His academic journey brought him to several further places over the years including the German universities of Augsburg and Passau as Full Professor, China’s Harbin and Swiss Geneva as Visiting Professor, besides the CNRS near Paris, and Graz. His entrepreneurial side is reflected by being a CEO of the Audio Intelligence company audEERING. He is co-author of 5 books, and more than 500 scientific contributions on the topic, President-Emeritus of the Association for the Advancement of Affective Computing, Editor in Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing, and occasionally emotional himself.
