Funzing Talks | Could Pseudoscience Ruin Your Life?
- 182 Stoke Newington High Street, London, N16 7JD
You would think that an industry that focuses on helping people better themselves would be led by kind-hearted and genuine people who want the best for you.
In reality, a charismatic conman can make their way to the top of this unregulated industry with little more than a zero to hero story and the ability to write a good headline.
You might think 'surely wanting to better yourself can’t be dangerous?' But without understanding how this world works it can leave you, your friends, and your family open to exploitation. Every day thousands of people shell over thousands of pounds for huge coaching programs that promise unmeasurable results. Relationships are ended on the word of a 'guru' and ever more people quit their jobs to develop their 'Self'.
At a time of huge uncertainty, when more and more of us are looking self-development to deal with everyday stresses or even mental and physical illnesses, should an unqualified, money hungry charlatan be able to sell you untested and harmful products and services? Even worse, should they try and convince you that you are struggling when you don't actually have a problem?
From working as a therapist and running a self-development group, I have seen this industry gain popularity and more people investing time and money in courses, books and products. After all, it is when you are in need you are at your most vulnerable, and this is when the promises made by self-development coaches are the most seductive.
In this talk, I will be giving a researched presentation on a range of personal development techniques, the key players and the schemes they use to drain your bank account.
I will also share strategies that I use with my own clients that have generated consistent results. My aim is to help you understand the self-development industry and present you with a range of techniques that are available for you to use.
What you will learn by attending:
How the self-development industry works on the inside
The difference between science and pseudoscience
The reasons why so many people believe in things without evidence
How organisations operate and take all your money off you and potentially ruin family relationships
The potential damage caused by “leading authorities” such as Jenny McCarthy and David Wolfe
Lots of tools and techniques that actually work that you can take away with you and use at home

With a scientific and sceptical approach to therapy and self-development, he has a unique and honest opinion of the industry and those who profit from it.
Matt regularly features on the radio, podcasts and on stage, where he shares his knowledge of the industry to try and help and many people as possible to be better informed and less likely to be taken advantage of, both financially and emotionally.
