This Funzing Experience:
One in ten people will face depression and anxiety in their lifetime, although the true figure might be much higher. The cost to individuals and society is enormous, involving personal distress, absence from work, and suicide.

Indeed, suicide is the leading cause of death in the UK for men under 50. Yet mental illness is stigmatised in a way that physical illness is not; there is a feeling that sufferers are just weak, or simply need “to go for a good run”.

My talk fights this stigma. I describe my lifelong battle with depression and anxiety. I will talk about the causes and treatment of depression, and describe how genes, upbringing, and environment combine to produce changes in the brain that lead to the illness.

I will conclude with the lessons I have learned that enable me to live, most of the time, an apparently normal life. I hope that my tips will of help to others.

Professor Trevor Harley is Chair of Cognitive Psychology at the University of Dundee. He is author of several books on psychology, and has carried out research on consciousness, language, sleep, and dreams.
