This Funzing Experience:

How do memes encourage and inspire mass shootings?

Do computer games depicting terrorist groups as ‘heroes’ radicalise young people?

How do terrorists use social media platforms to radicalise, recruit and plan attacks?

These are some of the critical questions being asked within security, policy and academic circles trying to make sense of how violent extremists use the internet.

It is no secret that certain terrorists have unfortunately become extremely adept at using these tools to further their agendas.

This talk uses critical research undertaken by the presenter and other prominent researchers working in the field. It will take the audience through a journey of how the internet has become a vital tool for violent extremists and how tech companies, policymakers, security agencies, and academics around the world are trying to disrupt this

Dr Suraj Lakhani is a lecturer at the University of Sussex, and also holds the role of Director of the Sussex Terrorism and Extremism Research Network. Over the past 10 years, working in the field for various think tanks and university institutes, Suraj has researched topics including radicalisation, counter-terrorism policy, online extremism, and the crime-terror nexus.

During his doctoral thesis, Suraj interviewed a large number of former violent extremists to better understand their motivations.
