In 1938, Hitler met Neville Chamberlain, who came away believing that “here was a man who could be relied upon when he had given his word”. This was a failure to recognise deception that had dire consequences for the world. Could we do better today?
Modern research into body language, physiological responses and speech pattern analysis puts us in a much better position to spot lies. At the same time, it equips us better to deceive others, if that is our desire or intent. Some personality types lie more comfortably than others but deception is a skill that can be learned to some extent. It has much in common with acting.
Both art and science are involved in reading the cues or “tells” of lying and proficiency is important in many contexts, like playing poker, political negotiations, jury decisions and police interrogation of suspects, as well as our everyday dealings with other people.
He is author and co-author of some 33 books, including Love and Instinct, Psychology for Performing Artists and Born Gay: The Psychobiology of Sex Orientation and has published around 130 articles in scientific journals. In collaboration with colleagues at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, he produced a theory of the evolution of EEG brain oscillations and has shown how brain activity can be used to identify sexual preferences. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and makes frequent TV appearances in news and documentary programmes.
Two recent series in which he was featured as expert commentator were “Inside the Mind of a Serial Killer” and “Stalkers Who Kill”.
