Is there a new elite?

Britain is often seen a class-ridden society with the graduates of Oxbridge and the top public school playing a dominant social role. But was that the case historically and even if so is it still true today? What about the alternative view that Britain has come to be dominated by the top 1% or even the top 0.1% by income? That is the rich or super-rich including many of those who work in the City of London. Alternatively some point to the growing influence of the upper middle class or what one influential commentator has called the "dream hoarders". These mark themselves out with particular tastes in relation to consumption (for example, certain types of food, a preoccupation with exercise and health) as well as a predisposition for technocratic politics. Who really runs Britain nowadays?

Daniel Ben-Ami has worked as a writer for many years during which he has contributed to numerous national, specialist and international publications. Ferraris for All, his book defending economic progress, was published in 2010. A paperback edition, including an additional chapter on the inequality debate in the West, was published in 2012. His book on global finance, Cowardly Capitalism (Wiley 2001), was recommended by the Baker Library of Harvard Business School. He is currently trying to unravel the many meanings of the concept of equality.
