This Funzing Experience:

We spend about a third of our life in sleep and perhaps a quarter of that in dreaming. Deprived of either we become physically and psychologically distressed yet until recently little was known about their precise function. Now some fascinating facts and theories are emerging and this talk will outline and discuss them.

Although the body is passive, the brain is highly active during sleep so something important is going on. Sleep is central is to the maintenance of life functions like temperature control and health of the immune system? It is also essential to memory consolidation whereby salient experiences from the day are filed appropriately for future reference. Dreaming seems to be the conscious manifestation of offline brain activity, not unlike introspection, mind wandering or day-dreaming (the so-called “default neural network”).

Does dream content simply spotlight our waking concerns or can it be interpreted so as to reveal our unconscious fears and desires? Freud saw dreams as wish-fulfillment and a window to the subconsious in which symbolism is a way of disguising their dubious meaning from the dreamer. An alternative view is that dreams are metaphorical and pictorial because this is a more primitive, non-verbal mode of thought.

Can dreams provide us with creative inspiration and guidelines for life’s decisions? Such questions will be addressed and some of the more weird phenomena of sleep, such as sexsomnia and sleep paralysis, described.

Dr Glenn Wilson is a London-based psychologist specialising in personality, sexual behaviour and physiological psychology. He was recently Visiting Professor at Gresham College, London and Adjunct Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. He was a pioneer of evolutionary approaches to human mating and dating behaviour, attracting some hostility when this was unfashionable in the 1970s and introduced the 2D/4D finger ratio as a marker of prenatal testosterone. In collaboration with colleagues at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences he produced a theory of the evolution of brain oscillations and has shown how brain activity relates to personality and can be used to identify sexual preferences. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and makes frequent TV appearances in news and documentary programmes.
