This Funzing Experience:

With Easter and Mother’s Day approaching (or any occasion you can think of), this workshop could help you make the perfect gift. Inspired by her vast collection of these unique postcards, Hazel Arnott (Royal School of Needlework, National Trust and long-term ZTC team member) will teach you how to embroider a very special commemorative card inspired by the World War 1 ‘silks’.

Hazel will show you how to embroider a design on silk organdie and mount it on specially cut ‘envelope’ card (materials supplied on the day) based on a floral motif design plus how to create customised lettering according to the occasion. Don’t worry if you don’t finish it on the day, you’ll go away with the materials and knowledge which will enable to you complete your embroidery at home. The size of the embroidery will be 15cm x 11cm (5.9″ x 4.4″), final size when mounted in the card will be 17.5cm x 12.5cm (7″ x 4.9″).

Silk postcards can be traced back to 1900, appearing at the Paris Exhibition embroidered directly onto card and subsequently enjoyed popularity both in Europe and the USA. They hit their golden era during and just after the years of the Great War, from about 1914-1920. Many of the popular cards held sentimental messages to loved ones for birthdays, anniversaries, and calendar celebrations and were embroidered in varying degrees of complexity and workmanship.

What better way to show your loved ones how much you care?!

Price includes all the materials you’ll need for the workshop (extra kits will also be available to purchase on the day) and refreshments. There’ll be an hour for lunch, please bring your own.
