This Funzing Experience:

What sociological factors lead a normal person to become radicalised? Is there a common psychological theme amongst terrorists? Are some people more susceptible than others to being recruited? Join leading UK criminologist and professor Imran Awan, as he talks us through what exactly makes a terrorist tick.

From the distinct phases involving the radicalisation process, to the ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors of terrorism, this talk will take the audience to the dark and evil world of terrorist behaviour and psyche.

Radicalisation is a complex phenomenon and there is no single pathway to it. Instead there are some common factors within the environment that can lead to trigger points that mean some people are more susceptible than others to being radicalised. This could include abnormal behaviour from certain individuals who are seeking an identity and a sense of belonging.

This talk will also introduce the ideas behind the explanation of radicalisation. Through the combined factors relating to psychological, criminological and sociological factors, it is important to understand the significance of trauma, fear and alienation as well as why some individuals and groups are keen to hold a position of moral superiority over those they view as ‘outsiders’.

The dynamics of self-identity and group-based identities are important when tackling communication of extremist thoughts via the use of spaces such as social media. This includes web-anonymity and the reinforcement of legitimising and glamorising terrorist behaviour.

Venue: The Actress & Bishop, Birmingham

Doors: 7pm / Talk starts: 7:30pm
