Meet gemma:
I'm a musical director, multi instrumentalist and composer using games and creative methods to encourage people from all backgrounds to make music, create new material, and enjoy group music participation. An experienced vocal coach and workshop leader, I trained with Sing for Pleasure and the Association of British Choral Directors.
My work has been supported by the PRS for New Music
Foundation, The Banff Centre and Sound and Music. Recent employers and
workshop clients include Theatre de Complicite, The Barbican, Red Bull,
Fender Guitar. I received the 2017-18 Headley Fellowship at Trinity
Laban conservatoire of music and dance for her pieces subverting the
traditional Audience – Performer - Composer dynamic.
The Minds Ear Orchestra, developed with Joe Carlo in 2011 is a performance piece in which the orchestra on stage exists only to animate the musical ideas of the audience members. The musicians performing in this piece were a huge range of talented professionals from concert violinists to rock drummers, and all underwent intensive training in aural skills, speed composition and orchestration, musical memory, improvisation and audiation to allow them to perform in the piece. We found that this method of social musical engagement and ensemble learning was a great melting pot of learning and place to push our own limits as musicians, and we now extend that to you.
