This Funzing Experience:
On Thursday 18th of May, join Explorers Connect for an evening with Brendan Rendall, who ran a marathon a day in the Malawian heat for a month. He'll inspire you to take on challenges that you never thought possible. Archaeologist Alicia Colson will also be joining us to give a fascinating talk on her work with ancient rock paintings in Canada.

A trip to the nation in 2008 saw Brendan get into contact with Friends of Mulanje Orphans, a community-based orphan care programme supporting over 3,500 children. The trip changed Brendan's life: as a result, he quit his office job to become a Special Education teacher, and then went on to sell all his belongings and travel the world. As a thank-you to the children who first inspired him to make overhaul his life, Brendan decided to take on this ultra-run to raise funds for a new education building for them.

In this talk, Brendan will recount the challenges of running from the Zambian to the Mozambique border, from battling injury to illness to extreme temperatures to disintegrating trainers. He will explain how the overwhelming generosity of the people of Malawi helped him to pull off a superhuman feat and renew his appreciation for life.

Alicia Colson is an archaeologist who specialises in the examination of rock art using tools from the digital humanities. She’s talking about her first field trip where she learned how to survey for, find and record pictograph sites in White Otter Lake in the Canadian Shield. This expedition lasted 10 weeks but involved canoes and boats, camping on beaches, northern lights, a large forest fire, and a three-story log castle.
