Have you ever watched a debate and saw someone win it who didn’t deserve to?
How did they do this?
A debating speech is more than just a list of arguments, it has many layers including styles, themes, tones and principles. A common debate mistake is just to attack the arguments however the audience might be a lot more invested in the principles or style of the speaker, than just a specific point. With this workshop we will learn a little more about those layers so we can engage better not only with what the arguments are, but what they mean to the audience.
We will be covering the many layers of an argument and how to take it down from tackling the specific arguments, overarching themes down to the emotional content and tonal delivery.
Join Debate: London and our Lead Coach Shaughan Dolan as we tackle the soul of debating - how to pick apart the other side.
Shaughan's career has focused on political campaigning. Across his career, he has won Parliamentary elections, has had bills debated in Parliament and secured £750 million in spending on non-violent conflict resolution at a time of government cutbacks. Shaughan is a trainer for Idebate Rwanda. Rwanda’s first-ever debate training programme for young people. The programme has grown significantly since 2013 and has educated over 1,000 students across 5 countries in the art of debate, and trained over 100 coaches that continue year-round training at local schools throughout Rwanda. He has debated at the Oxford Union and is also the Debate Coach at Harrow School – one of the UK’s most prestigious public schools.
