Sunrise Wildlife Photo Walk in Richmond Park
- Richmond, TW10 5HS
- (Exact address will be provided after booking)
Photograph the park during sunrise with tuition from an experienced local photographer.
We'll meet around sunrise, in the beautiful setting of Richmond Park to photograph the scenery and hopefully wild deer, during a walk of around 2 to 3 miles.
During autumn the rut (mating season) will be in progress, so we can expect action with the stags bellowing & competing for the chance to mate. During winter the stags are more chilled out, concentrating on building their fat reserves to get through the cold weather.
The park is beautiful on an autumn morning, with the changing colours and occasional mist and during winter we can hope for frosty scenes - there are many photo opportunities around.
I will help you to understand the most important camera settings, give composition tips and show you how to achieve the best results while paying special attention to the welfare of the deer and our safety.
The only photos I will take will be to demonstrate what I am showing you, along with some of the participants that I will share with you later (you can decline if you like).
We'll stop for a drink at one of the coffee kiosks, either partway through or at the end depending on how the session goes, where we can discuss our results. So you'll be able to purchase drinks/snacks, but bring water and a snack if you think you'll need them while walking.
Richmond Park is a National Nature Reserve covering about 4 square miles. It has ancient woodland and approximately 650 wild roaming Red and Fallow deer. I have lived nearby for over 25 years so I know it very well.
Almost any camera will do but something with a longer zoom (200-300mm) will be useful to capture images of the deer while keeping at a safe distance. We will be outdoors for 3 to 4 hours, so please dress accordingly. An umbrella is handy if showers are forecast. The ground is likely to be wet with dew so consider your footwear.
Please note: encounters with deer cannot be guaranteed as they roam freely within the park. We usually find them and during the rut, we can listen for their bellowing. If however, we really do have trouble finding any, I will offer you a free place on an upcoming event so you get a second chance for an encounter.
Parking is available at Pen Ponds car park (zoom in on the map below, do not use the postcode listed by Funzing for satnav as it may be inaccurate). Please send me a message if you need directions or intend to use public transport.
Please ensure you are fit and healthy enough to cope with walking up to 3 miles over sometimes rough terrain without holding up the group.
Minimum age 16.
Dogs not allowed during the autumn rut due to the risks involved with deer in the vicinity.
